Thailand has had many coups since World War II, but it has always kept it's Monarchy. Today Thailand has a stable Constitutional Monarchy. Rama IX is the longest reigning King ever to hold the throne (over 50 years). The Thai people love and are fiercely loyal to their King. The word "Thai" means "free". Thailand has been an island of freedom since the fall of Laos and Cambodia to the Communists in 1975. In the 1860's Rama V freed the slaves and declared freedom of choice in religion, and Rama IX upholds this principal today. Legally the Thai people are free, but spiritually they are slaves to a false system of worship. They are slaves not because of the law, but because of their upbringing and due to extreme peer pressure. In spite of the fact that missionaries are free to preach and plant churches most Thai have never heard a clear presentation of the Gospel and some have never even heard the sweet name of Jesus Christ. Thailand is an open field, but there are only about 12 independent Baptist missionaries (all groups) in Thailand, and fewer Christians than any other country in Asia with the exception of North Korea.
